After we presented at the Inclusive Leadership Summit, John Griffiths invited us to be interviewed on his KBOO radio show. John hosts Disability Justice: An Everyday Pursuit for Survival, which airs on the first Friday of each month at 9:30 AM. Jenna and Heather had a great time speaking with John and are excited to share the interview with you! We’ve put together some key highlights from the conversation.
Talking with Parents and Guardians About Relationships
Our Boundaries and Beyond program will soon offer educational sessions for parents, guardians, and providers. These sessions will help them understand the importance of intimate relationships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). We’ll also go over different scenarios in class and one-on-one to help people with IDD talk about these important topics.
Sex Toys
During the interview, John asked some great questions about sex toys. In the Boundaries and Beyond program, we will discuss topics like how to use and take care of sex toys to stay healthy. Jenna shared an example about how important it is to use one toy for one specific part of the body. For example, a toy used for the anus shouldn’t be used for the mouth or vagina to avoid infections.
Abuse Resources
Heather talked about some resources for survivors of abuse that will be available on our website. John shared his concern for some sex workers who might be facing exploitation but also reminded listeners that not all sex workers experience this. The abuse resources on our website will be helpful for those dealing with different forms of exploitation.
